Shane began playing basketball at Montgomery College-Germantown, Maryland from 1989-1991. During this time he was voted to the Region XX Junior College team in 1989-1990 while setting the single season scoring record with 24.8 points per game. Shane was an integral part of the first team in school history to win the Region XX tournament and qualified to play in the 1991 Division III National Junior College Championship in SUNY Delhi New York. While in college at Salisbury State University in 1992-1994. Shane spent 2 years as the Assistant Basketball Coach and Head JV Coach at Worchester County School in Berlin, MD. After graduating from Salisbury State University in 1994. Shane served as Assistant Basketball Coach at Montgomery College-Germantown, and Assistant Basketball Coach at the University of Delaware, with his Brother Mike Brey. Shane has worked many camps nationally and coordinated and directed a number of basketball camps and coaches clinics around the country.
Shane hails from an athletic family. His Brother, Mike Brey, is the Men's Basketball Head Coach at the University of Notre Dame. His Father, Paul Brey, was a well renowned Coach and High School Athletics Director in Maryland, while his Mother, Betty Brey, was the Women's Swim Coach at George Washington, and perhaps the families most accomplished athlete. She held the world swimming record in the 100 meter butterfly event and competed with the U.S. Swim Team at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. She is a member of the Indiana Swimming Hall of Fame in Indianapolis. Paul and Betty Brey both passed away in 2015. Shane's Uncle, Jack Mullen played Guard at Duke on the school's first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Team in 1960. Shane's Sister Brenda Brey was an All-American swimmer at LSU.
Shane and Tracy Brey have been married for 25 years. Tracy was a competitive swimmer for many years and is an excellent all around athlete. They have two children, Hailey (21), involved in competitive swimming and Josh (17), involved in competitive basketball & swimming.
